Unmatched Flexibility
For High-Traffic Hangars

Modern aircraft maintenance requires facilities that can adapt to changing demands on the fly. For this project at the Turkish Technic facility, we engineered a massive five-piece hangar door mullion system tailored specifically for high-traffic and high wind speed aviation environments. This specialized setup allows the facility to operate the entire span as one colossal entryway for wide-body aircraft, or as five distinct doors for smaller jets, optimizing both workflow and hangar climate control.

By utilizing a dynamic lifting mullion design, the structural guide columns between each door segment can be hoisted up and out of the way into the roof structure. This leaves a completely unobstructed clearance when the full hangar width is needed. When lowered, these mullions provide rigid, wind-resistant tracks for the individual door sections, ensuring durability and safety even in harsh weather conditions.

The Challenge

The primary hurdle was designing a massive structural opening capable of withstanding heavy wind loads, while offering the flexibility to service different sized aircraft simultaneously. Opening a standard single-span door for a single narrow-body aircraft results in massive heat loss and exposes the entire hangar to outside elements.

  • Maintaining indoor climate control and energy efficiency during winter months.
  • Securing structural integrity across a massive, mostly unsupported span.
  • Accommodating both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft schedules side-by-side.
  • Reducing cycle times for opening and closing operations.

Our Solution

We deployed a multi-part vertical lifting door system integrating movable mullions. This design breaks the massive structural span into five manageable sections that can operate completely independently or in synchronized unison depending on the daily operational requirements.

  • Installed heavy-duty lifting mullions that clear the opening completely when hoisted.
  • Integrated robust weather-sealing on all five door panels to minimize heat loss and prevent draft.
  • Configured individual motor drives for the independent operation of each specific door segment.
  • Utilized high-strength aluminum frames and dual-layer fabric to allow natural light in while resisting high wind pressures.
